Something's off with your pet. Let's work out what to do next.
Tell us what you're seeing. We'll help you decide whether to head in tonight, call in the morning, or keep a close eye — and what the visit is likely to cost, so nothing at the front desk catches you off guard.
PawShield Pet Insurance
Accident & illness cover from $19/mo. Claims paid in five days — no vet paperwork to chase.
Start with the symptom
The things owners look up most, usually late at night. Each guide starts with the signs to watch for, then what the visit costs.
Limping
Most limps can wait a day. A handful shouldn't — here are the nine signs that mean tonight rather than tomorrow.
Vomiting & diarrhea
One episode is rarely an emergency. Frequency, colour and whether water stays down are what decide it — here's what to watch.
Itching & hair loss
Allergies, mites and thyroid trouble look alike from the outside. Here's the order a vet works through them.
Cat sneezing
Cat flu, dental disease, and foreign bodies all start the same way. Discharge colour is the first fork in the road.
Ear infection
Head shaking and a smell point one way, scratching the ear flap another. What the vet looks for first.
Not eating
A day off food is a signal. Two days is a problem — and puppies and cats are on a shorter clock.
What it costs before you walk in
Reported ranges, not quotes. The exam fee is only the entry ticket.
| Visit or procedure | Reported range |
|---|---|
| Routine wellness exam | $85–$200 |
| Core vaccine package | $40–$50 |
| X-rays | $55–$160 |
| Bloodwork (CBC) | $200–$600 |
| Dental cleaning, with anesthesia | $700–$1,000 |
| Emergency visit, before treatment | $150–$600 |
Three things that move the bill
Same dog, same problem, wildly different total.
- Time of day. A Sunday-night visit can cost two to three times a weekday appointment for the identical exam.
- Who owns the clinic. Corporate groups standardise and charge more for the exam, but bundle more into it.
- What gets batched. Exam fees are charged per visit, not per problem. Three questions in one appointment cost the same as one.
Split the bill into monthly payments, not a second worry.
Any vet, any clinic. Decision in under a minute, plans from $250 to $10,000, no interest for the first 12 months.

1 Where the numbers come from
Clinical guidance is drawn from the Merck Veterinary Manual, VCA teaching materials, and AAHA guidelines. Prices come from clinic-reported data with a date attached. If we can't source a figure, it doesn't go on the page.
2 What we won't do
No drug names or doses, and we won't tell you it's fine when we can't know that. Our thresholds are deliberately cautious editorial standards — when in doubt, we'd rather you went in. A wasted visit costs far less than a missed one.
